Breakfast Treasure Hunt: Instead of doing the same weekday routine of pouring your dog’s food in the bowl and just putting it out in front of him, take some time to set up a Treasure Hunt so your dog has to hunt to for his breakfast. Make sure to do this outside where other animals cannot steal the food before your dog gets to it. If inside is the only option make sure to ask your parents first for items to be aware of in your household. For instance place food on non-staining surfaces, use a pet place mat and be sure to clean up anything left behind, you want to do this again, so let your parents know you’re being responsible.
Choose 3-5 spots to hide the dog food and divide your dog food into 3-5 even amounts to place at these spots. If you are worried about the surface your dog will be eating off put the food on cement areas, pavers, wood boards, large rocks or if in the garden/dirt put the amount of food in his bowl at one of places or place to pet placemat on the ground. Have your dog watch and wait, say ’ while you set up the Treasure Hunt. If he is still learning how to ‘’ have a helper hold his collar gently and remind him to ‘’. Set out placing the even amounts of food for his breakfast in the places you chose earlier. Do not allow him to (go for the food) until everything is ready and you have walked back to him and given him your command to start hunting, ‘’.
Encourage him to find one patch of food at a time one after the other by pointing to the food as you go with him too. Calling him to find the food but no doubt he will sniff it out in no time. Not only will you both have fun but your dog has just worked hard for his breakfast, what a clever boy! To add some delight your pooches play time (ask an adult who helps with monitoring your dog’s diet) add some small pieces of, safe for dogs to eat, fruit or vegetables to the food you have placed out. This will bring a big smile to everyone’s dial for the day ahead.
What do you get up to with your pet on a Saturday morning or when you time to play with your dog?
