There are times in life when you may feel like you want to contribute more to the people and community around you but lack the confidence to go out there and do it. I dipped my toe into the water several years ago when friends at the time suggested I should volunteer with them at the Woodford Folk Festival. It struck me as a very good idea as I really wasn’t sure which direction to take in my life and career at the time and why not meet a whole bunch of new faces that could inspire new ways of thinking.
I didn’t know too much about the Woodford Folk Festival at the time either, I had been once with a friend in my teenage years but really didn’t appreciate to scope and magnificence of the occasion. I set about getting my online application to volunteer sent in and since most of work experience was director towards children I applied for the Children’s Festival. A nerve wracking 2 week wait, to be sent a ‘you are unsuccessful’ email, please apply for another position! Wow, self doubt popped in my head to say hello as I wasn’t as confident with my other skills to use on such a grand scale. So I fought off the self doubt, applied again and this time I ticked the box ‘I will do anything’, thinking I would be cleaning the loos, which I would actually take pride in doing too. By than my driving force was the chance to be a part of something my friends so highly recommended, spending time camping with them and sharing an amazing experience together instead of what volunteer position I held.
Well another fortnight later an email arrived in my inbox with ‘Thank you for your application to be a Personal Assistant with the Executive Support department. Congratulations, you have been accepted for the position. ‘Shut the front door’ What……..? Was I reading the right email for the right person? Are they serious? A P.A……. I could barely type let alone take notes of any sort for someone else, arrrrrhhhhh!!!!!! Oh well I had to just go with it and do the best I could with what I know I am capable of. I dug deep and found out that my strengths are being organised, getting along and having a go at anything even if I didn’t feel very confident doing it at the time, I knew my confidence would grow.
Corresponding with Danielle the P.A. co-ordinator and other P.A.’s in our team put me at ease instantly, the feel good Woodford vibe continued to spread from there and I have never looked back. In hindsight I’ve realized that I didn’t have to know everything, I didn’t have to be the best at typing or note taking and that I was able to ask questions at any time to gather the information I needed to get the job done. Also my natural instinct to want to learn more, having a helpful, caring and respectful disposition out shone the set of skills of had to work on.
I meet so many new and interesting people that soon became great friends along with my friends that encouraged to participate in the first place. The Woodford experience is something beyond what I can express in words, it’s a sensation, a mix of emotions that gives you new way of seeing the world and the people around you, gives you glimpses of hope towards a beautiful sustainable future and makes you appreciate the present moment. Now I enjoy being part of The Planting and The Winter Warmer which gives you the warm and fuzzy feeling to share with others.
If you have the chance to be a part of a community event near you, which event would you be a part of?
